Meteora hiking tours

Viator lists 22 guided hikes between the rocks. We read the 10 that pass our review bar in full and recommend these 4.

These four guided walks take three to four and a quarter hours. Starting prices range from €23.80 to €38 per adult. You follow paths between the rocks with a mountain guide. Three include hotel transfers from Kalabaka or Kastraki by minibus or minivan.

Choose the Great Meteoron walk for a morning visit when the monastery is open. Groups have up to 12 walkers. Choose the St Dimitrios route for ruins before a visit inside Great Meteoron or Varlaam. For a shorter afternoon walk, choose the Kastraki cave hike with its village meeting point. Pick the sunset cave walk if you want sunset views with hotel transfers both ways. Neither enters a monastery. All four need moderate fitness. Bring €5 in cash for each monastery you enter.

Adult starting prices for these four walks range from €23.80 for the Kastraki cave hike to €38 for the sunset cave walk. The Great Meteoron walk and St Dimitrios route each start at €35 per adult. Monastery admission costs extra on the morning walks. Bring €5 in cash for the monastery door.

How long are the hikes and when do they start?

The Great Meteoron walk starts at 08:30 for four hours. The St Dimitrios route starts at 09:00 for four hours. The Kastraki cave hike takes three hours in the afternoon. The sunset cave walk takes four hours and 15 minutes including transfers. Check the afternoon departure time for your date before booking.

Which hike should I choose with or without a car?

Three walks include hotel pickup and return in Kalabaka or Kastraki. Choose the Great Meteoron walk or the St Dimitrios route for a morning monastery visit without a car. The sunset cave walk includes afternoon transfers. With a car, consider the Kastraki cave hike if caves and viewpoints are your priority. It starts and finishes at the village office.

What is included in the hiking tour price?

All four include a mountain guide. The Great Meteoron walk and St Dimitrios route include bottled water and hotel transfers. The Kastraki cave hike includes water without transfers. The sunset cave walk includes transfers without food or drinks. Monastery admission is paid separately on the morning walks.

Do the hikes go inside a monastery?

The Great Meteoron walk visits one of the six monasteries: Great Meteoron when open. The St Dimitrios route enters Great Meteoron or Varlaam depending on the day. That interior visit is unguided. Neither the Kastraki cave hike nor the sunset cave walk enters a monastery. Both morning routes also pass Ypapanti outside those six.

Can children join the hikes?

The Great Meteoron walk and sunset cave walk accept children from six. The Kastraki cave hike starts at seven. The St Dimitrios route recommends ages seven and over despite child tickets starting at six. That route also needs at least two adults per booking.

How fit do I need to be?

All four walks require moderate fitness. Give them a miss during pregnancy or with a spinal injury or heart problems. The Great Meteoron walk climbs from Doupiani rock towards the monastery. The Kastraki cave hike follows uphill paths to viewpoints above the village.

Can bad weather cancel my hike?

Bad weather can cancel the Kastraki cave hike. The sunset cave walk and St Dimitrios route can be cancelled for bad weather or too few walkers. All four walks offer a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

What should I bring and wear?

Bring hiking shoes and cash for monastery entry. Women need a skirt below the knee for monastery visits. Everyone needs covered shoulders at the monasteries. Men need long trousers. Men also need long sleeves on the Great Meteoron walk. Bring your own food and water for the sunset cave walk.

Which hike should I choose for my first visit?

For a first monastery visit, choose the Great Meteoron walk with up to 12 walkers. The route passes Ypapanti on the way to Great Meteoron. Hotel pickup and return in Kalabaka or Kastraki are included. Great Meteoron closes on Tuesdays. Choose an open day if its interior is your priority.

Going independently

Can I hike Meteora without a tour?

Check Great Meteoron's closing days for your date. Check the Kastraki bus timetable at Kalabaka bus station. Walk the old monks' path from Kastraki to Great Meteoron. Pay €5 in cash at the Great Meteoron door.

A mountain guide leads the walk. You hear the local history along the route. Hotel pickup and return on both morning walks and the sunset cave walk.

Go on your own: Great Meteoron entry per adult; transport costs extra
€5
Book a tour: Kastraki cave hike per adult; no transfers
from €23.80

What I'd do: I'd book a guided hike for a first walk between the rocks.

? Closing days and fees cross-checked , at every build.

Anastasia Antonova, editor

I write and edit everything on this site: the monasteries and the days they close, the trains, the tickets, and the tours.

For this page I read the tour listings and compared what each option includes and what it costs.

Closing days and entrance fees come from the notices at the monastery gates, cross-checked against two published timetables at every build. Tour prices, inclusions, group sizes and review counts come from the listings and carry the date they were read.
