What the sunset rocks are
The sunset rocks are free viewpoints? on the loop road between Rousanou and St Stephen. They look across Meteora’s pillars and the monasteries built on them. Sunset tours stop here. An independent visit suits you if you have a way back down after dark.
The sandstone pillars began as river deposits. Earthquakes and erosion shaped the rocks.?
Hermits probably began settling here in the 11th century?. Monasteries were built on the peaks during political instability in Thessaly in the 14th century?. The cliff tops provided places for retreat and prayer. Meteora joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988?.
Where the viewpoints are
Psaropetra is a viewpoint on the main road. Its name means Fish Rock.? It is a sunset spot.?
Near Rousanou, a path links the nunnery to the upper main road. There is a panoramic viewpoint on bare rock by this road. Nearby viewpoints look towards Rousanou on its narrow pillar.? Choose this area if you want the monastery in your photograph.
The sunset views extend towards the Pindos mountains.? If you are meeting a driver, agree the precise roadside stop before leaving town.
Sunset times through the year
Sunset is around 17:20? in December and around 20:50? in late June. These are Athens times. They give the seasonal range for planning your evening.
Winter puts sunset earlier in the day. In summer the return to town falls later in the evening. If you are organising transport, work from the sunset time for your travel date.
Tour pickup times move with the season’s sunset. If you book a tour, use the pickup time for that departure. For a winter visit, leave the afternoon free if you want to combine a monastery with sunset.

How to get there
A taxi from Kalabaka station takes about 15 minutes? to the first monastery gate. Taxis wait outside the station. If you are going straight to a viewpoint, agree the destination and fare before getting in.
From Kastraki, the old monks’ paths reach St Nicholas in about half an hour?. The climb to the Great Meteoron takes about an hour?. These estimates end at the monasteries. If you walk up, allow for the onward walk to your chosen viewpoint.
From Athens the drive takes about four hours? to the Meteora area. The coach leaves Liosion station for Trikala. A local bus or taxi completes the journey to Kalabaka. The rail route uses a train from Athens Larissa station to Paleofarsalos and a connecting Hellenic Train bus to Kalabaka.?
Getting back down in the dark
The path from Holy Trinity to Kalabaka takes about 45 minutes?. That estimate begins at the monastery. It excludes the walk from your sunset viewpoint to the path. If you do not know the route, make the descent while daylight remains.
If you plan to stay for sunset, arrange a return taxi before going up. Agree the pickup point with the driver. The public bus around the monasteries was withdrawn in 2024. Plan with a taxi, the paths or a tour.? Make another return plan if it does not cover your evening.
Photographs
For a photograph of Rousanou on its pillar, use the nearby panoramic viewpoints.? The building occupies the top of the rock. A wide frame includes the surrounding cliffs. A closer frame gives the monastery more space in the picture.
If you want the wider landscape, a wide-angle lens includes the valley and foreground. A zoom lens can pick out a monastery. If you use long exposures as the light fades, a tripod keeps the camera steady.?
If photography is the main reason for coming, arrive with time to choose a position before sunset. The light changes through sunset and into the afterglow.? Staying for that later light needs a return plan too. Inside monastery churches photography is forbidden.?
Sunset with a monastery first
St Stephen suits a stop before sunset if you want to avoid stairs: a bridge leads in from the road.? It closes on Monday?. Rousanou closes on Wednesday?. In summer St Stephen shuts for lunch from 13:30? to 15:30?.
If you want to enter the Great Meteoron, avoid Tuesday? and arrive before its summer closing time of 15:00?. Entry there costs €5 per person?. At the others it costs €3? to €5 per person?. The fee sources differ on the charge outside the Great Meteoron.
For any monastery visit, bring cash for the door and cover your shoulders. Women need a skirt below the knee. Men need long trousers. Gates lend wrap-around skirts to visitors who need them.?
When to go
Tour vans arrive together an hour before sunset?. If you want time to choose your position before they arrive, go up earlier.
If you want a monastery visit before sunset, weekends give the widest choice in the April to October season?. All six monasteries? are open on Saturdays and Sundays?. On Fridays?, Varlaam and St Nicholas are closed. Orthodox feast days can change the usual opening pattern.?
Sunset photography depends on the weather.? If clear views are the reason for your visit, check the forecast before choosing the evening. Wind and cold can be stronger at the viewpoints.? For an evening on the rocks, bring a jacket even in summer.
