Is Meteora worth it as a day trip from Athens?

By Anastasia Antonova, editor·Updated 17 October 2026

Yes, if three monastery visits justify five to six hours of travel each way by train and replacement bus. The direct train line to Kalabaka is closed. The train tour and the coach tour with beachfront stops each last 14 hours. Stay overnight if sunset or a slower visit matters.

The tours below cover coach travel and the train route. The independent plan aims for two interiors using the paths from Kastraki. The changes show when to cut a stop or stay overnight.

What to change if

You want sunset
Stay overnight if sunset is part of the plan. The return to Athens takes five to six hours by train and replacement bus.
The climb would take too much time
Agree a taxi fare at Kalabaka station if you want to skip the climb from Kastraki. The ride to the first gate takes about fifteen minutes.
You travel on a summer Friday
Varlaam is closed. Use St Stephen after its 15:30 reopening if you add a taxi transfer.
You travel in winter
Use a taxi or stay overnight if the Great Meteoron is your winter priority. It closes at 14:00 with closures from Tuesday to Thursday and from 1 to 28 February.
Steps are the obstacle
Choose St Stephen for its bridge from the road. There are no steps.

Questions

Is the train or coach better for a day trip?

Choose the coach if avoiding a train change matters. The rail route changes to a replacement bus at Paleofarsalos. The coach options include lunch for groups of up to 35. Choose the train option if a minibus group of up to 15 matters more than included lunch.

Do the tours include monastery tickets?

No. Each monastery charges €5 per adult in cash at its own gate. Bring €15 for the three visits. There is no combined ticket or online booking for the monasteries.

Can I enter all six monasteries on a day trip from Athens?

Stay overnight if all six interiors matter to you. Each selected Athens tour enters three monasteries. The summer weekly timetable has all six open on weekends. Feast days and the Great Meteoron's dated closures can change that.

Can I use a public bus between the monasteries?

The public bus around the monasteries was withdrawn in 2024. Ask at Kalabaka bus station whether anything runs. Plan around a taxi or the paths if travelling alone. Replacement buses from Paleofarsalos and intercity coaches from Trikala still run.

Anastasia

I'd stay overnight if the paths or sunset were the reason for going. A day tour suits a visit built around three monastery interiors.
