What Great Meteoron is
Great Meteoron is the largest of Meteora’s six? inhabited monasteries. Its church and living quarters occupy the top of a rock above Kastraki. It is an active Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The museum and old domestic rooms make it a useful choice if you want to understand life in a monastic community.
The wider Meteora site entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988?. Its architecture and painted churches are part of that designation. Allow about an hour? inside for the church and museum. Add time for the climb if you plan to visit another monastery afterwards.
A short history
Saint Athanasios the Meteorite founded Great Meteoron in the 14th century?. The sources disagree on the founding year. After years on Mount Athos, he established an organised monastic community here. Hermits had lived among the Meteora rocks from the 11th century?.
His successor Joasaph had given up royal life to become a monk. He enlarged the church built by Athanasios.? Part of its wall survives within the later church.? Joasaph also added cells and a hospital as the community grew.?
The main church was built in the middle of the 16th century?. Its frescoes belong to the same period of post-Byzantine painting recognised in Meteora’s World Heritage designation.? Earlier access to Great Meteoron depended on a long ladder. The monks could draw it up when threatened.?
Inside
The main church contains frescoes from the 16th century?. It is known as the katholikon. The chapel of Saint John the Baptist stands beside its sanctuary.? Other chapels include the Virgin Mary’s chapel in a cave and the vaulted chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen.? If church architecture interests you, these smaller buildings add to the visit alongside the main church.
The museum displays religious icons and historical codices, or manuscript books.? The old kitchen is a domed building beside the refectory, the monks’ dining hall.? The ossuary holds the skulls of former monks on shelves.? The terraces give views across the surrounding landscape from the top of the rock.? Photography inside the churches is forbidden.?

The stair and the way in
The entrance requires a climb of about 300 steps?. A taxi or tour transfer still leaves this steep stair to climb. Choose this monastery if you are comfortable with a sustained climb. If stairs rule out a visit, St Stephen has a bridge from the road with no steps.?
Allow climbing time in addition to the hour? inside. The Visit Meteora half-day monastery tour gives 60 minutes? here. The Meteora Thrones panoramic morning tour gives 50 minutes?. If you want longer in the museum, an independent visit leaves the pace to you.

Closing day and hours
Closing day cross-checked Nov 3, 2026? Great Meteoron closes on Tuesdays from April to October.? Great Meteoron closes Tuesday to Thursday in winter. It also closes from 1 to 28 February.? Summer visits run from about 09:30? to 15:00?. Feast days can change access without notice during Easter week. The Transfiguration on 6 August? and the feast day on 15 August? can also affect visits. Tours replace a closed monastery with an open one.

When to go

If you want to pair Great Meteoron with nearby Varlaam, avoid Tuesday? and Friday? in summer. All six? monasteries are open on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer timetable.?
Check the live weather on the rock before setting out. If the day is hot, put the climb early in your plan.?
