What Holy Trinity is
Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) is one of Meteora’s six inhabited monasteries?. It stands on a separate rock above Kalabaka. Holy Trinity and St Stephen stand apart from the main monastery group?. Visit for the painted church and terrace if you want to see the art as well as the view across the rocks.
The monastery appeared in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only in 1981?. The exterior the setting?. If you recognise it from the film, the visit brings you into a working Orthodox monastery with painted churches. The climb is part of the visit even when you arrive by car or on a tour.
A short history
Holy Trinity appears in a document from 1362?. Tradition credits the monk Dometios? with its foundation. The surviving main church came later. An inscription dates its construction to 1475 to 1476?.
The main church’s frescoes date from 1741?. The painters were the priest Antonios? and his brother Nicholas?. The entrance hall was built in 1689? and painted in 1692?. These dates belong to different parts of the building.
The rock stair was completed by 1925?. Rope ladders and baskets hauled by rope had long linked the monastery to the ground?. A main building burned during the Second World War?. The monastery underwent extensive renovation in the 1970s? and remains a working place of worship.
Inside
The main church has a cross-shaped plan and a dome resting on two columns?. A fresco shows St Sisois beside the skeleton of Alexander the Great?. The adjoining sacristy was built for sacred furnishings in 1684?. Holy Trinity’s manuscript collection has been kept at St Stephen since 1953?, together with manuscripts from Rousanou and St Nicholas Anapausas.
The chapel of St John the Baptist is a round room cut into the rock beside the entrance with decoration from 1682?. Behind the main church, the terrace looks across to other Meteora monasteries?. Photography inside the churches is forbidden?. If you want photographs of Holy Trinity in its setting, use the viewpoints across the valley?.

The stair and the way in
The rock stair has about 130 to 145 steps?. The monastery guides disagree on the count. The path descends from the road to the foot of the pillar before the climb. On the return, the walk from the foot of the rock back to the road is uphill.
The editor’s estimate is about one hour inside? for the churches and terrace. Add the approach and return walk to that allowance. The Meteora Trip morning tour gives Holy Trinity 20 minutes inside?, compared with 35 minutes? on the Meteora Thrones Athens day trip. Choose St Stephen instead if stairs are difficult for you or you use a wheelchair: it has a bridge from the road with no steps?.
