Entry costs €5 per adult at each monastery door.? Pay in cash. There are no online monastery tickets or timed slots.? There is nothing to book for admission itself. There is no combined ticket or skip-the-line entry. Each monastery collects its own fee when you arrive. A booking for a tour is separate from admission.

The closing day is the first thing to check. If a particular monastery matters most, build the visit around its open days. Then choose the others on the same route. Great Meteoron stands beside Varlaam. St Nicholas is on the road up from Kastraki. If you want to avoid stairs, St Stephen has a bridge from the road.? Its Monday closure still applies.?

Tickets

Fees checked Nov 3, 2026?. The adult fee is €5 at each monastery.? Cash is required at every gate. Cards are not accepted.? Children under 12 usually enter free.? Carry entry money for every adult in your party. Paying at a gate buys admission only to that monastery. A plan to enter all six in a day also needs the right opening days.? Open doors still leave stairs and travel between visits.

The tours shown here include transport. Monastery fees stay separate and are paid at the doors.? The local monastery tours enter 3 monasteries in 4 hours.? Routes may change when a monastery is closed. If entering a particular church is the reason for your visit, check the weekday before choosing a tour. A photo stop outside a monastery does not include an interior visit. Choose a monastery tour if you want several interior visits. The sunset e-bike option views the monasteries from outside.?

Opening days

Closing days cross-checked Nov 3, 2026?. The summer schedule covers 1 April to 31 October.? Each monastery has a weekly closure. Friday takes away more choice than other weekdays. Use the table to choose visits that fit your date. If you have a fixed day trip, check what will be open before deciding which interiors you expect to enter.

Monastery Closed, April to October Closed, November to March
St Stephen Monday Monday
Great Meteoron Tuesday? Tuesday to Thursday
Rousanou Wednesday Wednesday
Holy Trinity Thursday Thursday
Varlaam Friday Friday, or Thursday and Friday by source
St Nicholas Anapausas Friday? Friday

Great Meteoron also stays closed 5 to 7 August, 30 September and 1 October, 1 to 28 February (its official visiting page, read Oct 16, 2026).

Saturday and Sunday offer all six on the summer timetable.? Choose a weekend if you want the full choice. Friday leaves four open under this planning timetable.? Varlaam is closed. We also plan around a closure at St Nicholas. A Friday visit to St Nicholas may find the gate open despite the closure in our table.? If Great Meteoron is your priority, avoid Tuesday.? If Varlaam matters most, avoid Friday.?

For summer planning, use about 09:30 as a rough starting point.? Aim to finish Great Meteoron by 15:00.? Allow for closures around 16:00 or 17:00 elsewhere.? St Stephen shuts for lunch from 13:30 to 15:30.? Check the day’s hours if you are arriving late. Feast days can override the weekday pattern. Easter week and the Transfiguration at Great Meteoron on 6 August can bring closures without notice.? So can 15 August.? If your visit falls on a feast day, check locally before travelling up to the gate.

Dress code

Cover shoulders at every monastery. Women need a skirt below the knee. Men need long trousers. Shorts do not meet the men’s dress code.? Women in trousers need a wrap over them. The rule applies when you enter with a tour as well as on your own. Booking transport does not change what you need to wear.

Wrap-around skirts are lent at the gates.? Women walking between monasteries in trousers can carry a long wrap for entry. Choose a long skirt you can climb stairs in if you prefer to wear it throughout the day. Men should wear trousers before leaving for the monasteries. A top with sleeves is the simplest choice if you want your shoulders covered throughout the visit.

Winter

Winter brings shorter hours from November to March.? The extra closing days differ between published timetables. Great Meteoron closes Tuesday to Thursday in winter. It also closes from 1 to 28 February.? Varlaam’s ranges from Friday only to Thursday and Friday.? If either is your main reason for visiting, check the schedule in the week you travel. Build the rest of the day around that visit. A summer route needs another check before a winter visit.

If snow is forecast, check road access locally before driving up. Keep your route flexible. The public bus around the monasteries was withdrawn in 2024. Plan with a taxi, the paths or a tour.? In winter, plan with a taxi, the paths or a tour.? Check the return journey before choosing your last monastery. If you use a taxi, agree the fare before getting in.

What to bring

Bring cash in €5 notes for each adult entry.? If you are visiting interiors, pack clothes that meet the skirt or trousers rule and cover your shoulders. Wear shoes suitable for stairs if your route includes the climbs. Carry water for the walks. Add a layer if you will be out at the viewpoints in the wind. Keep your cash and wrap where you can reach them at the gate. Photography inside the churches is forbidden.? Put the camera away before going inside.

Questions

Can I turn up without booking a tour?

Yes. Independent visitors pay €5 per adult at each gate.? Take cash. If you go on your own, plan around the closing days. Choose a local monastery tour if you want transport between stops arranged for you.?

Can I see the rocks without buying monastery tickets?

Yes. The sunset viewpoints on the loop road between Rousanou and St Stephen are free.? You can build a visit around these viewpoints without entering a monastery. If you only want the landscape, a monastery tour is optional.

Is Friday still worth going?

In summer, Friday leaves Great Meteoron and Rousanou open. Holy Trinity and St Stephen are open too. Varlaam is closed.? St Nicholas may open despite its Friday closure on the timetables we track.? Choose another day if Varlaam is the reason for your trip.

Which day works for Great Meteoron and Varlaam in winter?

Saturday and Sunday work for both monasteries in winter. The Great Meteoron also closes from 1 to 28 February. Monday is another option.? These days avoid the disputed midweek closures. If visiting both interiors matters most, plan around one of those days. Recheck the schedule in the week you travel.

Does a minibus tour mean I can avoid the stairs?

Road transport still leaves stairs to climb at Great Meteoron and Holy Trinity.? St Stephen has a bridge from the road instead.? If stairs are difficult, choose a route that includes St Stephen. Its weekly closing day is Monday.?

Will a sunset tour take me inside a monastery?

Visit Meteora's sunset tour enters one monastery.? The usual stop is St Stephen. Mondays use St Nicholas or Rousanou instead.? The E-Bikes Greece sunset tour stays outside.? Choose the Visit Meteora option if an interior visit matters. Entry still needs cash at the gate.?
