What St Stephen is
St Stephen is one of Meteora’s six inhabited monasteries?. It is a working Orthodox nunnery above Kalabaka. Its Greek name is Agios Stefanos. A bridge links the road to the entrance. Choose it if a stair climb would rule out a visit to the other monasteries.
The monastery belongs to Meteora’s World Heritage site, inscribed in 1988?. The setting joins sandstone rocks with buildings made for monastic life. The view from St Stephen reaches across the Thessalian plain towards the Pindos mountains?. The main church holds the relics of St Charalambos?. That dedication explains why the church and the monastery have different names.
A short history
The monastery was founded in the 14th century?. Antonios Kantakouzenos is remembered as its first founder. Philotheos later rebuilt the older church in 1545?. This is the small church dedicated to St Stephen. Monastery building on Meteora’s summits grew during political instability in Thessaly?.
The larger church of St Charalambos followed in 1798?. It has a cross-shaped plan with a porch along its north side. Its wall paintings are later work by Tsotsonis?. The building and its painted interior therefore belong to different periods.
The older chapel suffered damage during the Second World War and the Greek Civil War?. A community of nuns took over in 1961?. The present monastery combines their religious life with public visits. Its museum occupies the former refectory, the community’s dining hall?.
Inside
There are two churches?: St Stephen and St Charalambos. For a normal visit, the main church of St Charalambos is the focus. The old chapel is reserved for the community’s worship?. If you are coming for the interior, plan your time around the main church and museum.
The museum displays icons and church treasures?. The terrace looks over Kalabaka and the plain?. Allow time here if the view is part of your reason for coming. Photography inside the churches is forbidden?.
