Start here

One full day suits a visit built around monasteries and sunset. Morning minibus tours enter three of the six monasteries in four hours?. That leaves the afternoon for Kalabaka or Badovas before returning to the rocks. Choose two days if you also want a longer walk or Theopetra.

Plan from the weekday before choosing a route. Each monastery has its own closing day. The old paths offer an approach on foot from Kastraki or Kalabaka. The church and museums give you reasons to spend time in town between visits to the rocks. If stairs are a concern, start with St Stephen’s bridge approach. If walking is the priority, start with the paths from Kastraki.

The six monasteries

Great Meteoron is the biggest of the six inhabited monasteries. Choose it if the long stair suits you. Neighbouring Varlaam has fewer steps. Rousanou has a short bridge. St Nicholas is first on the road from Kastraki with steep steps. Holy Trinity stands on an isolated pillar. Choose St Stephen if you need an approach without steps: a bridge links it to the road. In summer St Stephen closes for lunch from 13:30 to 15:30?.

Entry costs €5 per adult at each door in cash?. There is no combined ticket or online booking. Cover your shoulders. Women need skirts below the knee and men need long trousers. Gates lend wrap-around skirts. Photography inside the churches is forbidden. Choose a minibus if you want transport between the gates. Monastery fees remain separate from the tour booking?.

From April to October the closing days are Monday for St Stephen, Tuesday for Great Meteoron, Wednesday for Rousanou, Thursday for Holy Trinity and Friday for Varlaam?. St Nicholas also closes on Fridays on the timetables we track?. Some sources list it as open every day. A Friday visit may find the gate open.

The old paths

From Kastraki the old monks’ path reaches St Nicholas in about half an hour?. Allow about an hour? for the path to Great Meteoron. From Holy Trinity the descent to Kalabaka takes about 45 minutes?. Choose these approaches if walking below the pillars matters as much as visiting inside. These estimates cover the paths. Allow separate time to look around inside a monastery.

Wear walking shoes and carry water. In hot weather choose an early start. A guided hike suits you if you want help finding the route. Visit Meteora’s morning hike lasts four hours? and enters Great Meteoron when open. Meteora Trip’s Ypapanti walk enters Great Meteoron or Varlaam depending on the day?. Each hike enters one of the six monasteries?.

The hermit caves of Badovas

Badovas holds the cliff cells of hermit monks between Kastraki and Kalabaka. Wooden remains of ladders and scaffolding survive high on the rock?. A trail from Kastraki reaches the area on foot. Visit if you want to see where solitary monks lived before exploring the larger monasteries. At the foot of the cliff is St Anthony’s skete, a small monastic community partly built into a cave. Nearby are the cells of St Gregory?.

For a walk focused on caves, Meteora Trip’s Secret Caves sunset hike includes Badovas and enters none of the six monasteries?. Visit Meteora’s minibus sunset tour combines the caves with St Stephen. On Mondays it uses St Nicholas or Rousanou?. The E-Bikes Greece sunset ride also stops at Badovas and the church in Kalabaka. It sees the monasteries from outside?.

The sunset

Sunset falls at about 17:20 in December and 20:50 in late June, Athens time?. The free viewpoints are on the loop road between Rousanou and St Stephen. Tour vans arrive together about an hour before sunset. If you want only the view, a monastery visit is not needed.

For sunset without a car choose a tour with return transport or arrange a taxi before going up. Agree the taxi fare before getting in. The path from Holy Trinity down to Kalabaka takes about 45 minutes?. If you use that path, descend before dark. A sunset tour suits an evening centred on the landscape. Choose a morning monastery tour if entering more buildings is your priority. Meteora Tour’s smaller sunset option takes up to eight people?. It enters one monastery chosen by opening hours.

Kalabaka and Kastraki

Kalabaka’s railway station is about ten minutes on foot from the hotels and bus station?. Stay in town if arriving by public transport shapes your plan. Kastraki sits beneath the pillars about half an hour’s walk from Kalabaka?. Choose the village if you want to start on the paths towards St Nicholas or Great Meteoron.

In old Kalabaka the 11th-century? Church of the Dormition has a marble pulpit in the nave?. It is still a working church. If you want an indoor stop, the Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum has wildlife dioramas and mushroom displays. It opens from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays?. Weekend hours are 10:00 to 18:00?. This is a town visit you can use when rain changes a walking plan.

The cave of Theopetra

Theopetra is a limestone cave with evidence of human presence at least 50,000 years ago?. That figure comes from radiocarbon dating. Finds cover the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. The museum in Theopetra village displays material from the excavations?. Excavations produced stone tools and pottery. The site preserves evidence of the shift from hunting and gathering to farming?. Choose this outing if prehistoric life interests you as much as the monasteries.

The cave reopened in 2025?. The cave and museum open every day except Tuesdays? from 08:30 to 15:30?. A €5 ticket per person? covers both. If Tuesday is your spare day, use it for the paths or a museum in Kalabaka instead.

When the monasteries are shut

Friday leaves four monasteries open on the summer timetables we use?. All six open on Saturdays and Sundays?. A closed gate still leaves the paths and viewpoints as options. If interiors are the reason for your visit, choose the day around the monastery you most want to enter.

Winter brings more closures from November to March. Great Meteoron closes Tuesday to Thursday in winter, and from 1 to 28 February.? Varlaam closes on Friday or on Thursday and Friday?. Easter week can bring closures without notice. The same applies to 6 August at Great Meteoron and 15 August?. Tours swap a closed monastery for an open one. If you are visiting independently, keep Badovas or a town visit as an alternative.

One day or two

If you have one full day in Meteora, use the morning for a tour entering three monasteries. Spend the afternoon in Kalabaka or at Badovas. Finish at a sunset viewpoint if you have arranged the return journey.

Stay for two days if you want a longer walk or time at Theopetra without cutting monastery visits. Put the walk early in the day if heat is a concern. Allow travel from Athens separately: the train and connecting bus take five to six hours each way?. An overnight stay gives you the option to start the next day at the foot of the rocks. If a chosen monastery is shut on arrival, check the next day’s closure pattern before using that day for Theopetra.

I used the named sources and dated tour records for these figures, with walking times from my own estimates.
