What Kalabaka is

Kalabaka is the town below Meteora’s six inhabited monasteries?. Kalambaka and Kalampaka are spellings of the same place. It has the railway station and bus station. Most of the area’s hotels are here.

The town spreads below the rocks at the edge of the Thessalian plain. Its old streets lead to the Church of the Dormition. Monastery and sunset tours pick up in town.

Choose Kalabaka if you want to stay near onward transport. If you also want to see the town, an overnight stay leaves room for the church and museum between outings.

A short history

Kalabaka was the Byzantine fortress town of Stagoi by the 10th century?. Its ancient name was Aiginion. A Greek inscription built into the Church of St John the Baptist preserves that name.

The modern name Kalabaka has Turkish roots linked to a fortress?. The name Stagoi remains in church use. The Church of the Dormition survives from the medieval town. It was built over an earlier Christian church.

German forces burnt Kalabaka in 1943?. It was rebuilt after the war. That rebuilding helps explain why much of the town looks modern despite its long history. The old churches sit within a town that has continued to grow.

What to see in Kalabaka

The Church of the Dormition is a Byzantine building dated between the 10th and early 12th centuries?. Sources differ on its construction date. It stands in the old town over the remains of an earlier basilica.

The Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum has displays of birds and mammals?. Its mushroom displays show how fungi develop in their habitats. Choose this stop if you want an indoor visit focused on wildlife.

The station, the buses and the taxis

Kalabaka railway station is about 10 minutes on foot? from the hotels and bus station. It is the terminus of the old Thessaly railway?. Taxis wait outside. If you take a taxi, agree the fare before setting off.

The public bus around the monasteries was withdrawn in 2024. Plan with a taxi, the paths or a tour.? Check the return departure at the same time. Plan the monastery visit around those departures.

A tour with town pickup is another option if you want transport arranged. For a booked pickup, use the meeting point on your booking. The railway station and bus station are separate places.

How to get there

From Athens, allow 5 to 6 hours? by train and connecting bus. Take the train from Larissa station to Paleofarsalos. A Hellenic Train bus completes the trip to Kalabaka within the same ticket. The direct rail link has been closed since the floods of September 2023?.
