Before choosing a tour
How much does a Meteora day trip from Athens cost?
Starting prices for the five Athens return options compared here range from €91 to €105 per adult. The 07:45 coach with lunch starts at €91. The train and minibus trip starts at €105 without lunch. Monastery fees are extra on all five trips.
How long is the day, including the journey?
Allow about 14 hours from Athens and back. The 07:45 coach gives you five hours locally including lunch. The train trip includes four hours locally for monastery visits and the hermit caves. The 09:00 coach returns to Larissa station at around 22:45.
Will I go inside all six monasteries?
Each trip enters three of the six monasteries. The 07:45 coach plans to enter Great Meteoron, Rousanou and St Nicholas. Closed monasteries are swapped for open ones. Check the closing days before booking if one particular monastery matters to you.
Can I get picked up from my Athens hotel?
The hotel pickup trip collects from selected central Athens hotels. Your pickup location and time arrive by email before the tour. The return ends at Larissa station without hotel drop-off. The other trips meet in the Larissa station area, with a 06:40 arrival required for the train trip.
What is included in the price?
All five options include return travel from Athens and transport around Meteora. Lunch comes with the four coach options compared here. The train and minibus trip includes the bus connection from Paleofarsalos to Kalabaka. Monastery fees and live guiding inside the monasteries are excluded from all five trips.
Can children and babies join these trips?
All five accept children, with adult tickets starting at 13. Each booking needs at least one adult ticket. Children aged three and under ride free on an adult's lap on the hotel pickup trip. Infant seats are available on the 07:45 coach.
How fit do I need to be for the monastery visits?
The hotel pickup trip requires moderate fitness for the monastery stairs. On that trip you can wait on benches in the parking area if the climb is too much. St Stephen has a bridge entrance with no steps. Other monastery visits still involve climbing.
Can I cancel if the weather forecast is bad?
All five trips give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. You get no refund for cancelling later. Bad weather can also cause the 07:45 coach or train trip to be cancelled. This also applies to the hotel pickup trip.
What should I bring and wear?
Bring €5 in cash for each monastery door. The dress code requires covered shoulders with a skirt below the knee for women or long trousers for men. Women also need long sleeves on the hotel pickup trip. Bring a phone and earphones to use the audio guide on the 07:45 coach.
Which trip should I choose for a first visit?
Without a car, choose the 07:45 coach with lunch if you want the earliest departure with lunch included. The 08:00 coach suits you if you want beachfront breaks along the way. With your own car you can visit the open monasteries independently. Allow about four hours of driving each way from Athens.
Going independently
Can I visit Meteora from Athens without a tour?
1. Check which monasteries are open on your weekday. 2. Take the train from Athens to Paleofarsalos. Change to the included bus for Kalabaka. Allow five to six hours each way. 3. Check the timetable at Kalabaka bus station. Arrange a taxi from the railway station or use the paths between monastery visits. 4. Bring €5 cash for each monastery. Pay at each door.
Return transport from Athens booked for you. A local guide and transport between monasteries. Lunch included in the four coach options compared here.
I write and edit everything on this site: the monasteries and the days they close, the trains, the tickets, and the tours.
For this page I read the tour listings and compared what each option includes and what it costs.
Closing days and entrance fees come from the notices at the monastery gates, cross-checked against two published timetables at every build. Tour prices, inclusions, group sizes and review counts come from the listings and carry the date they were read.
